logo.jpgThe European Union is getting a fundamental  role in the response to the coronavirus pandemic. In fact short-term priority is to stop the spread of the virus and support member states, the long-term goal is to mitigate the socio-economic impact of the crisis. Here are 10 steps the EU has taken, along with the Parliament, to fight Covid-19 according to Eurydice report. The soonest the European Commission organized a common European response to the Covid-19 outbreak. Especially to reinforce public health sectors and mitigate the socio-economic impact in the European Union. The E.U has put all the necessary means to help Member States giving objective information about the spread of the virus and the real efforts to contain it..President von der Leyen has established a Coronavirus response team at political level to coordinate E.U. response to the pandemic problem During this heavy situation, across the European Union, all countries are making efforts to help  neighbours and assistance is given to those most in need: donations of protective equipment such as masks, cross-border treatments of ill patients and bringing stranded citizens.

On 20 May, the European Commission proposed country-specific recommendations for all EU Members States and the United Kingdom, on the Commission’s growth strategy which promotes competitive sustainability to build an economy that works for people and the planet. With the the coronavirus crisis this is the main aim to reach. To prevent shortages or delays in getting key medical devices on the market, Parliament decided to postpone the application of the Medical Devices Regulation. Parliament adopted the Commission proposal on Friday, by urgent procedure with 693 votes to 1 and 2 abstentions, allowing the application of the Medical devices. Regulation to be postponed by one year until 26 May 2021.Given a pressure on national health authorities and manufacturers of medical devices, in order to avoid shortages or delays in receiving the medical devices needed to fight COVID-19, were they follow the new rules of the Medical Devices Regulation from May this year. The European Parliament is therefore supporting the proposal to postpone the application of this Regulation by one year to allow authorities and manufacturers to give priority in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic by continuing under current procedures.

The proposal is awaiting to be approved by the E.U states and published in the Official Journal before it will enter into force, within maximum 26 May.In 2017, two new rules about medical devices and in vitro diagnostic medical devices were adopted to improve patient safety and increase transparency on medical devices across the EU. The new regulation for medical devices was supposed to be fully applicable on 26 May 2020.The date of application of the In Vitro Diagnostics Medical Devices Regulation is not affected by the new proposal and becomes applicable from 26 May 2022, as planned..Moreover disinformation is a major threat to public health. Parliament is asking for a new European information source to let all E.U. citizens have access to verify content. It has also asked social media companies to avoid fake news and hate speech.
